While going about its usual duties, a large foundation drilling machine drilled through a duct containing thousands of fibre optic cables.  

According to the news report, a significant number of cables were pulled out of the ground, severing thousands of fibres. Hundreds of Virgin Media customers across the area were left without broadband – including New Malden, Surbiton, Wimbledon and Kingston and, alarmingly, even Kingston Hospital was said to be affected.  

This is an expensive mistake to happen – and one that could have easily been averted. Clearly, all the cables had to be reinstated and repaired. The location of these cables was not a secret, but it seems lack of due diligence had a high price.
